1.4 million ounces of silver hauled from Shipwreck from WWII era cargo ship

Valued at almost 235 million US dollars, the SS Gairsoppa is considered the on the largest precious metal sea wrecks ever recovered.

Spotted by German fighter plane and then torpedoed by an U-boot, the Gairsoppa sank on  Feb 16, 1941 along with its cargo of 48 tons silver and also taking most of its crew to a grave nearly 5000 metres below the sea.

The Odyssey expedition has recovered an estimated 43 percent of the total lost silver bullion, and hopes to recover the rest shortly.
